Alternative Active Ingredients against Plaque Psoriasis

Gustav Kvist Kalmar, Leonardoskolen Aarhus School

Around 3% of the world's population has psoriasis. Conventional medicine for treating plaque psoriasis (PPs) can be harsh for the patient. Therefore, it’s beneficial to find an efficient alternative with less detrimental effects on the patient for PPs. This study aims to compare the efficacy of certain promising active ingredients against Enstilar (betamethasone and calcipotriol) in moderate to severe PPs. A topical, left to right comparison, double-blind, vehicle control, 8-week study with replicates was designed. One patient received curcumin lotion, Indigofera tinctoria lotion (ITL), crocodile oil, B-12 lotion, CBD lotion, almond oil, body lotion (vehicle control) and Enstilar to marked areas on the body, twice a day, as well as 3 control areas with no treatment. An additional 8-week replicate study compared B-12, ITL, and a combination lotion of the two with Enstilar. After 8 weeks, the PASI score for Enstilar, B-12, ITL and crocodile oil decreased by 100%, 87%, 80% and 80% respectively. The other ingredients performed the same or worse than the no-treatment controls or vehicle controls. In the replicate study, the B-12 and ITL had a 38% and 67% decrease in the PASI score respectively. The combination lotion had the same decrease in the PASI score as Enstilar (75%). No adverse effects (AEs) were reported during the studies. B-12, ITL and crocodile oil showed the most promising effects on moderate to severe PPs. The combination lotion had a similar effect as Enstilar. Enstilar was the best performing treatment but is also the treatment with most documented AEs.
